NOTICES
THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR A: REFLECTION. Having been banished from the garden of Eden, Adam and Eve found themselves in a world where they were not hitherto prepared to live in. They found themselves in a world of fragile and broken relationships; a world where faithfulness to God’s word will always pose a challenge to them and their descendants. Being mindful of the people for whose salvation He has come and their pitiable condition, Christ makes it clear that He has come to seek out and save the lost. And so, making His way into the world, Christ takes the position of the Father who went in search of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. He comes in knocking at our doors this Lenten season asking us to let Him into our hearts, minds and souls. Cf.Rev. 3:20.
THANK YOU to the staff and pupils of the Holy Family School for sharing their Ash Wednesday Service with us this week. Thanks to Father Joe for celebrating Mass for us all, and it was good to see so many Parishioners in church too. I heard many lovely comments about the impeccable behaviour of the children and how engaged they all were throughout the whole service. I was particularly impressed by the clarity and quality of the readings and responses by a number of children of all ages. It would be wonderful if they could join us at Mass in Stainforth on Saturday evenings and read for us so clearly and with such devotion. These young people are our future and I’m sure many would love to celebrate with us regularly if given the opportunity to do so.
A BEAUTIFUL BLESSING FOR LENT was sent to us this week. It first appeared in the Monthly Newsletter from the Diocese of Northumberland and we hope you enjoy reading it.
A BLESSING FOR LENT
In the footsteps of centuries of pilgrims, go now to embark on your Lenten journey.
Consider how you may simplify your days, so that you may travel lightly.
Be alert to all that could side-track you: notice that which beckons alluringly,
or with apparently greater urgency, than the pilgrim journey Christ invites.
Do not try to cover more than one good day’s journey at a time.
Know when to stop for food and sleep,
so that the journey will not be too great for you.
Walk humbly, knowing that the goal
is not recognition, achievement or reward,
but simply to have come to know Christ and yourself more intimately.
Be on the lookout for other pilgrims, caring for those who limp, or fall;
those who cannot see the way forward:
pilgrimage is richer in community.
Go now: place your hand into the outstretched hand of Jesus Christ,
allow the words of the story to guide you and pray for purity of heart and mind.
Amen.

NOTICES
ASH WEDNESDAY marks the beginning of Lent and the commemoration of the forty days Jesus spent in the desert. A season of prayer, giving and fasting to prepare us for the Resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday.
A WARM WELCOME back to Father Joe as he returns to us from visiting his family and friends in Nigeria. We hope his stay was a pleasant and restful one.
WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER: This year St Lawrence Church, Hatfield will be hosting the Women’s World Day of Prayer on Friday 3rd March at 2.30pm with a rehearsal on Thursday 23rd February at 3.15pm. Each year the service is written by the Christian women of a different country. This year it is the turn of Taiwan. It has been isolated internationally for decades and, as of April 2022, only 13 of the 193 UN member states and the Vatican City/Holy See have recognised Taiwan as a sovereign country. You are part of a huge wave of prayer which circles the earth for at least 38 hours. Please come along and join in. Each church has a small reading. If you are interested to read the few lines, please speak to Teresa.
PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR THE PEOPLES of Ukraine and other places in the world where people are fighting for freedom from oppression, persecution, wars and even genocide. The Ukrainian war is set to continue for a long time and our support for them must remain steadfast. Please also remember in prayer the peoples of Turkey and Syria in their time of need.
LENTEN REFLECTIONS: Ash Wednesday is fast approaching and CAFOD (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) would like to invite you to join us as we seek to make space and time to draw closer to God and our global family through reflection and prayer this Lent. Each day in our emails we will share a reflection on one of the readings of the day, stories of our global family, a prayer and a suggested action you might like to take as we prepare for Easter. Join us on this journey by signing up for our daily Lent emails. https://cafod.org.uk/weekly-reflections
FOOD BANK – All donations are vital to our local Food Bank and ensures it can continue to operate. Many thanks to all who contribute and all who run the Foodbank.

BAPTISMS. With joy we welcome Charles, Franklyn and Tobias McKenzie into our Catholic community as they receive the Sacrament of Baptism this evening before Mass at 5pm. Please pray for them and all their family.
AT MASS TONIGHT we bid farewell to Father Andrew who has been taking such excellent care of us while Father Joe was on leave. It’s been a busy period at Our Lady’s with a stream of baptisms and funerals. Father Andrew has been most supportive and compassionate with all the bereaved families, and many people have expressed their sincere thanks to him. So the time has come to wrap Father up and send him back to Manchester. We wrap him in love and gratitude and wish him every success in his studies and hope to see him again in the future.
MANY THANKS go to Anne and Russ Ward from Moorends for their kind assistance in transporting Father Andrew to and from Church to celebrate Mass with us over the last few weeks. It is very much appreciated.
CAFOD EMERGENCY APPEAL. In the early hours of Monday 6th February 2023, a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Türkiye’s border with northern Syria. CAFOD have launched an emergency appeal to help provide humanitarian support to the survivors of the Syria and Türkiye earthquake disaster. CAFOD is responding with support of provision of food, water, shelter, medical assistance and winter kits for survivors. Your donations in recent months have made that quick response possible. Let us join CAFOD in praying for our sisters and brothers affected by the earthquakes and the winter weather. Your support for CAFOD throughout the year allows our Catholic agency to act quickly when disasters strike. For more details visit CAFOD’s Syria Turkey Emergency Appeal online at https://cafod.org.uk/give
