NOTICES

MOST OF US WILL TODAY HAVE WATCHED the funeral of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, conducted within the constraints of the Covid Pandemic. The nation is galvanised as we are at once bound in the great outpouring of grief on the loss of a central figure in our lives while at the same time being spellbound by the spectacle of a Royal Funeral. In a year where most families have lost people who we have grown up with and cherished, we can relate to the grief of Queen Elizabeth and the Royal Family as they – like us – are deprived of the ability to gather together with wider family and friends to celebrate the life of the one they have lost.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, preaching at a Requiem Mass for Prince Philip in Westminster Cathedral last Saturday, offered prayers for the Queen and the Royal Family: “Every family in grief needs comfort and support, and none more so than a grieving wife, our Queen. May our prayers contribute to her comfort and support.” The Cardinal celebrated a Requiem Mass for Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, who died aged 99 at Windsor Castle on Friday 9 April. He praised Prince Philip’s long service and achievements:

“Achievements for young people, for engineering, for the environment, in the defence of our nation, for so many charitable causes. Yet it is for his selfless loyalty to the Queen and his tireless, generous sense of duty and service for which we give the most heartfelt thanks. Inspired by his Christian faith, and, I believe, by the example of his extraordinary mother, Princess Alice, the service given by Prince Philip will long be an inspiration to us all.” The full Homily is available on the Bishops Conference of England and Wales web site.

PLEASE REMEMBER IN PRAYER the family and friends of Ruth Tiplady, who died recently. Ruths funeral service will take place in our church on Tuesday at 10.30am.

SPARE A THOUGHT TO our Muslim friends who are now in the Holy Month of Ramadan and making huge personal sacrifices as required by their faith. A central tenet is the sharing of a ’Break-Fast’ or Iftar meal with family and friends but once again they are prevented by Covid from following this most important tradition.

CAFOD WALK FOR WATER – 10,000 Steps a Day. Collections are still being taken in support of Lilian’s amazing walk in aid of this appeal. So far over £150 has been donated and we hope to send the proceeds to CAFOD in the next couple of weeks. So, if you have not already done so, then please try and make a donation using the special envelopes in the porch or on the table as you leave church. .

FOOD BANK – This week the Foodbank has delivered food parcels to 18 homes in the area and 10 people came to collect from St Mary’s Church. Thanks so much to all involved and all who kindly donate food items.
